There are two primary types of happiness that will be explored below. A healthy balance in both is essential to our overall happiness and vitality.
Type 1 Happiness
Type 1 happiness is happiness you feel instantly upon exertion. Some examples of this are watching your favourite show, taking a hot shower, eating a delicious meal, playing sports, socializing and much more.
Type 2 Happiness
Type 2 happiness is happiness you acquire over an extended period of time by repetition of an activity that may not be instantly rewarding. Some examples of this are jogging every morning, learning a new language or skill, obtaining a degree, daily meditation and much more.
In order to achieve greater overall life satisfaction one must have a fair balance of both in their lives. It is much easier to engage in type 1 happiness. However, excess indulgence in type 1 happiness may lead to depression and a diminishing sense of self worth. Still, type 1 happiness must not be neglected entirely otherwise one is paving their path to burnout. We all need a little self care and indulgence sometimes.
Type 2 happiness is simple but not easy. Getting out of bed every morning to catch some sun and go for a run is not as instantly pleasurable as sleeping in. But done consistently it will have long term positive effects on both physical and emotional health. Type 2 happiness requires the cultivation of self discipline and consistency. However, once achieved it results in a great sense of accomplishment, an increase in self esteem and a great boost of confidence.
Remember, discipline leads to delightful days and a lack of discipline leads to depressive days. If you scroll through social media all day and eat junk food, you may enjoy the day. But how will you feel doing that for a week, month or even a year? Excessive indulgence and a lack of discipline long term will result in depression. Read more about depression here. On the other hand, discipline in the form of self love will lead to increased feelings of satisfaction and health.
It is encouraged to find a healthy balance between type 1 and type 2 happiness to improve your overall life satisfaction long term. Swing too far onto either side and you will loose the other. The key to feeling whole is balance in all aspects. Read more about The Difference Between Happiness and Pleasure here.
